In My Own Words
PURPOSE: I view my purpose as helping executives lead people in ways that stimulate the high quantity and quality output needed to achieve big goals and improve competitive advantage, while also enriching employee passion for their work, their team, YOU, and the organization over time. Whether it’s a “good to great” situation, or tackling a persistent and thorny problem, I focus on helping clients develop uncommon insight about the variables influencing the decisions and actions of others—and themselves. With fresh insight, you can then respond with fresh approaches that offer a high probability of (sustainable) success while minimizing unintended consequences.
COACHING STYLE: Style-wise, my approach is curious, no-nonsense, research-based, optimistic, and just humorous enough to keep it all in perspective.
LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY: For the full treatise, please navigate to the Work with Me page.
BRIEF WORK HISTORY: Prior to coaching, I held a range of product and corporate marketing positions at the product, continent/region, and national levels with EMC Corporation and Virgin in the US and Europe. On the product side, I’m proud to have been a member of the high-performing and hard charging launch team that helped EMC market the revolutionary product line that would wrest dominance of the external storage market from IBM in just three years (Symmetrix), and catapult EMC to new heights. It was a thrilling experience. I remained focused on bringing innovative solutions to customers at Virgin, too.
In those corporate roles (and since), I experienced both terrific and terrible–even bullying–leadership, both of which inspired me to study leadership formally to better understand the conditions for each and how one turns into the other. After repatriating, I bought a local business and executed a turnaround through fiscal controls and innovating numerous product and service improvements. I also guided the company through the tragic death of the company’s beloved senior manager.
ACADEMIC RIGOR: I am endlessly curious about business, culture, and leadership, and read and research all manner of related subjects for fun and application with clients. I earned a master’s degree in executive leadership, and a doctorate in leadership science from University of San Diego. I’m proud to report that the University faculty awarded me the 2009 Joseph Rost Memorial Excellence in Scholarship Award, and my research into leader and employee motivation beliefs earned the 2012 Dissertation of the Year Silver Medal. I earned his undergraduate business degree at Villanova University. I have also authored and coauthored articles, events, and training programs on leadership and motivation.
RANGE: I have been coaching leaders since 2000 and particularly enjoy coaching managers and senior executives in engineering/social media/technical/science roles and industries, and varied nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds in the North America, Europe, Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East.
BEYOND WORK: Outside of work I am passionate about nature, psychology, college basketball (Go ‘Nova!), politics, bold red wines, and sharing big ideas, experiences, and laughs with family and friends.
