Because knowing the man is as important as knowing the businessman, here is some personal information:
I am an avid reader. I favor adventure and human potential stories. I also enjoy real-world, empirical research on expertise and performance, leadership, human motivation and psychology. I’m currently working through two major compilations of research, The Cambridge Handbook on Expertise and Expert Performance and the Handbook of Self-Determination Research. Both are immeasurably exciting, and provide an empirically-proven, real-world basis for my work.
Why focus on research? Because the issues related to workplace performance and fulfillment have not changed much in the past few generations. We think that because the pace of change has accelerated in the past 50 years that the nature of how people relate with one another and what people need to bring out their
best skills and attitudes has also changed. They have not. Nor have the core skills needed to effectively respond to change.
For example, research on what employees want in and from their jobs are the same for the Gen X and Y generations (and whatever the next one will be called) as for their parents. Surprised? All generations want:
- Work Quality—job autonomy, challenges to learn on the job, and the meaning that people find in their work.
- A Supportive Workplace—family-friendly, supportive supervisors, relationships with coworkers.
And, the competencies that individual contributors, managers and executive leaders need in order to create workplaces that meet the needs of employees so they can perform at the highest levels possible also have not changed. (Lominger, 2001)
So, my work is based on well-researched, real-world, time-proven knowledge applied in an optimistic, results-oriented, and client-focused manner.
